Video: Barriers to Consumer Data Privacy and Patient Empowerment

President, CareJourney

Editor's Note: Free-flowing data will shape the future of consumer trust. At the 2019 Oliver Wyman Health Innovation Summit, Aneesh Chopra, CareJourney President and former US Chief Technology Officer, shared his thoughts with MedCity News on the state of healthcare data in America, the biggest barriers to consumer privacy, and how to spark more consumer empowerment amidst evolving privacy regulations.

Memorable Moments:

  • "So there are three things I think we need to do as a country. Number one, we need to find more ways to open up our data so we can understand, together, where we see pockets of high- and low-value care. Number two, we've got to find ways to empower individual consumers with their ability to aggregate information and share it with applications they trust...and last but not least, we've got to find ways to reward a delivery system that actually achieves that high-value performance metric ... ."
  • "What's now in the way of the vision of the consumer being able to access their data in an app they trust, the only barrier today is the belief system that we can actually get it done."
  • "From a sheer scale perspective, 2020 will be the year the plans have to come to the party. But, 2019 [was] when we [started] to see those early applications. My hope is that we'll have an Android equivalent to Apple, and we'll see the beginnings of an announcement coming, and that will be the leading apps that will drive adoption, and then the market place will explode."
